Bed bugs are tiny insects (about the size of an apple seed) that feed on human blood, usually while you're sleeping. They hide in mattress seams, headboards, furniture, clothing, and even cracks in your baseboards. They don’t jump or fly, but they move quickly and can multiply fast. Bed bugs are not a sign of dirt or bad hygiene. Anyone can get them.
Adult bed bugs are about the size of an apple seed. They have flat, oval bodies and are brown in colour, but they turn red after feeding. Young bed bugs, also called nymphs, look similar but are smaller and lighter. After feeding, they also darken.
Their eggs are tiny, white, and nearly impossible to see. A single female can lay hundreds of eggs during her life. These eggs stick to hidden places like mattress seams, cracks in furniture, or behind baseboards and pictures. They hatch in about one to two weeks.
Bed bugs usually come out at night. They’re attracted to the carbon dioxide we breathe, which is why they wait until we are asleep. Most people don’t feel the bite right away, so it can take time before you even realize they are there.
They like to hide close to where you rest or sleep. You might find them in your mattress, box spring, behind headboards, under wallpaper, in nightstands, or even inside outlets. They are excellent at squeezing into tiny spaces.
Once they feed, they go back into hiding. The scary part? Bed bugs don’t need to eat often. Some can survive for months without a meal. In the right environment, with warmth and access to food, they can live for almost a year or more and keep reproducing.
